"Chieftan79" bemoans reverse magnetism on a Silva ranger compass with the red needle pointing south. That behaviour can be easily reversed with a strong magnet to re-polarise the compass needle.
excellent. I bought for my grandson, just gone up to cubs and now his friends all want one
I bought 2 ranger and 5 classic compasses for my scout troop a year ago. since then 1 of the Ranger and 1 classic have reversed poles - (red arrow points south) even though they were not stored together.
Silva deny that the quality has changed recently or any responsibility. So after 35 years of devotion to the Silva brand I have decided to bin the remaining compasses and buy another brand.
brilliant compass, well worth the money, excellent quality
Far more reliable product than a cheaper compass I bought previously.
I have bought about 50 of these compasses for a D of E group in the past 3 years. The compass is accurate and well equipped with suitable scales and markings on the plastic case. It is not perfect. The new string arrangement is very weak. About 5 of the compasses have reversed their polarity over time. A disappointing number also leak, resulting in bubbles of air. It still represents decent value as I have found other cheaper compasses to inaccurate and even more susceptible to leakage and air bubbles.
This compass ande a new set of glasses helped give me confidence to pass my WGL night navigation section that I had previously failed 6 months before. Nice weight, shape and good glow in the dark.
Here is a short video on how to correct a reversed compass needle:
