I am 6ft and this Ice Axe is the perfect size for me at 65cm. Been using it for climbs up the Cairngorms and Sutherland and definately 1 piece of equipment you shouldn't leave home without when climbing in the Winter months. Great handling, very sturdy and light. I Give it 5 Stars.
Essential bit of kit for the winter walker and mountineer,
This ice axe feels well built (its made by black diamond!) its light weight and made of aluminum, seroulsy i wouldnt even know it was swinging around on my pack, ive used this axe to aid in walking up a munro so far so good and also to pratice self aerest, i would give 5 stars but the price for what it is is abit much.
I bought the product on a recommendation from a friend. The Go Outdoors discount offers persuaded me to buy in November as several Autumn/Winter trips are planned to the Lake District and if last year's weather was anything to go by, i'll need it. At 65cm, the length is just right for myself (6ft) and the weight is good. The Head is one complete unit & not welded as other types are & the leash is quite substantial. The Axe will not be used in conjunction with serious climbing, but will be a useful bit of kit in the winter on some of the tougher scrambles.
This is a well made, lightweight axe for General mountain use. I prefer a shorter axe as self arrest is my primary concern for a walking axe. Secondly, ease of carrying when not in use is a big factor. At 6'3" I find this axe ideal but it may not suit you if your taller and want to use it as a walking aid. Although the leash may be heavier than it needs to be, it is very well constructed and comfortable. I would strongly recommend checking the BMC Crampon and Accessories guide if you are in the slightest doubt.
