One of the lightest classic ice axes available, ideal for glacial travel, easy mountaineering and winter walking.
This elegant Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe has a pared down single piece head with adze and classic pick for arresting and belay construction. The slender aircraft aluminium alloy shaft provides the necessary support for walking and negotiating moderate snow slopes yet drives easily into all but the hardest snow packs.
The Raven is equipped with a Slider Leash that helps prevent it disappearing down the mountain as well as providing extra support when engaged in pick work. To further assist when things get technical there is also a dual-density grip at the base of the shaft.
With CEN-B certified construction and a carabiner compatible eyelet in the head the Raven is the ideal too for glacial and general mountain travel.
This is a well made, lightweight axe for General mountain use. I prefer a shorter axe as self arrest is my primary concern for a walking axe. Secondly, ease of carrying when not in use is a big factor. At 6'3" I find this axe ideal but it may not suit you if your taller and want to use it as a walking aid. Although the leash may be heavier than it needs to be, it is very well constructed and comfortable. I would strongly recommend checking the BMC Crampon and Accessories guide if you are in the slightest doubt.

Fantastic Ice Axe
I am 6ft and this Ice Axe is the perfect size for me at 65cm. Been using it for climbs up the Cairngorms and Sutherland and definately 1 piece of equipment you shouldn't leave home without when climbing in the Winter months. Great handling, very sturdy and light. I Give it 5 Stars.

I bought the product on a recommendation from a friend. The Go Outdoors discount offers persuaded me to buy in November as several Autumn/Winter trips are planned to the Lake District and if last year's weather was anything to go by, i'll need it. At 65cm, the length is just right for myself (6ft) and the weight is good. The Head is one complete unit & not welded as other types are & the leash is quite substantial. The Axe will not be used in conjunction with serious climbing, but will be a useful bit of kit in the winter on some of the tougher scrambles.
