The Black Diamond ATC-XP Belay Device is a durable, versatile belay device that features multiple friction modes to handle nearly any situation or rope diameter.
Thanks to the machined windows through the body, it's 30% lighter than it used to be. It uses friction grooves on each rope slot to generate three times the holding power, and the reversible design allows them to be bypassed for smoother abseiling or 'paying-out'.

First belay device used for indoor top roping, seems to be fine on fairly large diameter ropes.

No problems with this. I'm about 20% lighter than my partner and this is smooth to use when I am belaying him.

Great device!
This was my first belay device and has taken me from messing around at the wall to some big multi-pitch classics. Never had any issues with it, plays rope out smoothly and grips well in a fall situation (I'm a pretty slim guy and some of my climbing partners are pretty big guys and never had any issues with rope slip or anything). Looking to replace now as I want something to belay direct from the anchor so going to get the guide version, but would be hard pressed to stray from black diamond!
ATC-XP
Gives smooth payout of the rope when giving slack/lowering my partner. It also grips tight on the teeth side like you would expect. Haven't tried with 8.5mm ropes, but 10mm are fine. It's pretty cool being able to see the rope feed through the device.
Basically, it does exactly what a belay should do and it looks good!
Couldn't ask for more off this thing. Grippy enough to catch big whippers, without being a pain to pay out rope with when leading. Doesn't even require you to learn any new techniques! Good stuff
