Tilley TH5 Hemp Hat

Great look, great feel, practical and stylish

Bought as a Xmas gift and have been wearing several days and have had no issues, I do recommend going in store to try on as after trying on several different types the head size differed.

Nice looking hat when new but fades very badly, losing the attractive olive colour and turning a sickly terracotta shade. In addition it loses its shape and when you start a regular washing regime, as Tilley recommends, it proceeds to shrink. The headband can be stretched out again with some effort but the crown just gets smaller and smaller, ending up looking squat and inelegant.
I have replaced my five year old Hemp hat with a waxed cotton Outback model and hope that it lives up to Tilley's durability claims rather better than my defunct Hemp model has.

Keeps the sun out of my eyes and off my face and neck without worry of it coming off.

I bought this hat to prevent me burning my head on holiday in India. It was a last minute decision to buy a quality hat that will flatten to go into my suitcase and straighten out and still look good.

The temp got up to 45 degrees C in a pre-monsoon heat wave in Delhi. This Tilly hat kept me shaded, reasonably cool and sunburn free as we toured around India. It was crushed into bags on planes, trains and automobiles (as well as tuk-tuks and rickshaws). It still looks good and is ready for my next trip.

It's a bit more than I really wanted to pay but it's a quality item and I hope to get many years out of it.

what can i say fits great very comfy wicks perspiration away effectively. repels water really well keeps the drops of my specs. if you want a good outdoor hat look no farther

This is my 5th Tilley hat, 8th if you include those I got for my wife and her parents as well, so it goes without saying that Tilley is the hat for me.

About the TH5, specifically: it's lighter that the other Tilleys I own (TH4, two T3s and a TW2). Just as soft as the TH4, obviously, since they are both hemp hats, but because its brim is shorter it looks more elegant and its certainly more versatile. TH4 with its extra-wide brim rules as a sombrero on hot, still weather, but on windy days, or whilst on the back of a horse or bike, said brim turns into a sail. Not so with the TH5.

Although it does repel water up to a point, this is still a hemp hat, not a helmet, so under hours under a tropical storm it will get quite wet. Nevertheless, if you are crossing the Amazon, I assume you'll have a proper rain jacket. The TH5 under the hood of your rain jacket will acts like a visor, expanding your field of view whilst keeping the water away from your eyes.

Thanks to the unusually warm winter (so far), I've not had the opportunity to test it under below 0° conditions, but based on my experience with the TH4, it does protect your head and it does warm you up a bit. Better than no protection, anyway. Add a scarf and ear muffs (or closed cup headphones) and you're ready to go. Nevertheless, if it goes too far below 0°, that's when the Winter Tilley comes in anyway.

Excellent product. Many of my friends have them for riding and camping in hot places but I had been making do with a cheaper alternative. It was OK but I should have bought a proper Tilley Hat years ago.

Had my hemp TH5 about three years now. I've always worn hats, and this is easily the best I've ever had. In summer it keeps your head cool and stops any burning of my sparsely populated dome, in the winter it keeps off the snow and rain. When using in the rain, it absorbs the wet to start with, but then it sheds water. Mines now nicely aged looking, a bit faded but lots of character. Tilley will even replace it free if it ever wears out! Cracking hat, best bought in the shop so you can try on different sizes and get the right fit for you. You will not regret buying a Tilley.
