Paying for a name
3rd silva exped 4 compass in a year, 2 had bubbles and one of them bezzle fell out. Fair enough you can contact them for repair but the quality is not to good and for the price.

A serious go to compass
Silva know how to deliver a great compass. Very dependable and straightforward.
Would be great if the lanyard had distance increments.

not as good as they used to be
I have had one of these since the 90,s and it was great. How ever I decided to purchase the new version with the 1-40 scale for my BMC maps. The first time I used it I noticed a bubble appear as I hit around the 800m mark. Now (a year on) it happens at around 500m and if I hit the altitude 800 or above I get 2 or 3 bubbles that turn into one huge bubble. Silva would not entertain the warranty.

Appalling Quality
I'm 52 always used Silva compasses but today believe Silva are merely trading on their name and former Swedish heritage. compass is no longer marked as 'Made in Sweden', and the quality is dreadful. The compass I purchased had >2 degree error in baseline markings, when N mark on the bezel was aligned with index mark on the housing it had base grid lines which were visibly aligned 2 Deg to west of the base plate lines - serious potentially dangerous built in error. Returned to Silva for warranty replacement, which they duly did but second one still has an error in base lines ~1 deg west of base plate lines. An appalling lack of quality control! Looks like I will have to give Suunto a try.

Excellent piece of kit
The Expedition 4 is quite frankly the best on the market. It has everything you need short of military grade.
As for the review below, the compass has quite clearly depolarised- probably from being near your keys or mobile phone. You can post it back to Silva and they sort it for free.
