Those looking to learn the tricks of winter walking will be able to make the most of an event planned by the Dartmoor National Park Authority for next month.

Its General Introduction to Winter Walking will take place at Two Bridges on January 8th, offering "winter walking hints and tips".

Participants need to arrive by 10:30 GMT and it lasts for three hours.

One thing people should always make sure of is being properly equipped with the right clothes and footwear, with walking boots designed for all seasons and winter jackets being among the items people may wish to buy before they go walking.

Earlier this week, the Scottish government issued a warning to walkers to be careful when heading for the hills.

Noting how the unseasonally cold weather has led to the Nevis Range ski resort opening early, it has advised people to ensure they are well prepared.

This includes taking good navigation equipment, an ice axe and crampons, as well as checking the avalanche forecast in areas prone to such occurrences, it said.
