Britons may be reaching for the ski pants or crampons today (December 5th) after a weekend that brought heavy snow to the northern part of Britain.

Snowy weather descended on Scotland and moved down into the north of England, leaving uplands like the Lake District fells and the Pennines coated in the white stuff.

With lots of hail falling as well as snow, those heading out to ski or go walking may find they are much in need of warm winter jackets, thermal gloves and base layers.

And there is more of the same due today, with the Mountain Weather Information Service promising that areas such as the northern Highlands may be seeing almost constant snow.

Last week, the Glencoe ski resort said in an email to winter sports fans that an early season start may be possible because of the snow due over the weekend, with just a few more rocks needing to be covered and gullies to be filled in before the slopes could be opened.
