The Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) is to offer earlier updates on the next day's outlook as it goes into winter mode.

Providing information that may help those planning to go walking to ensure they have the right equipment and preparations, the service will offer updates online from 13:30 GMT, three hours earlier than in the warmer months.

That means people will be able to plan ahead and those doing so may be wise to ensure they have walking boots designed for all seasons, as well as winter jackets and other items to help cope with cold and possibly snowy weather.

Meanwhile, those wanting to stay safe in the outdoors have also been urged to sign up for the new emergency SMS service.

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland has revealed people subscribing to this will be able to send a 999 text in places where there is insufficient signal to make a voice call.
