Waterproof jackets, hiking boots, backpacking food and rucksacks were among the themes of the new BBC comedy show The Great Outdoors, which was screened last night (July 28th).

The episode featured a walking club in Berkshire in which new arrival Christine (Ruth Jones) arrives for a simple Cotswolds ramble heavily equipped, including a huge rucksack and a waterproof coat with so many pockets she has one exclusively for keeping train tickets in.

While the theme of the show was comedy, it may serve as a reminder for those who love to go walking to find the right equipment and clothing for the route in question, as the requirements for a gentle ramble through the Chilterns will vary from a mountain hike.

In an interview with the Metro News published today, Mark Heap, who plays group leader Bob, said he enjoys walking himself, having undertaken a hike around Romney Marshes before speaking to the paper.
