Those who like to
go walking gain all sorts of health benefits, an expert has noted.
Communications manager at Walking for Health Moira Halstead said that the activity can help prevent strokes and diabetes, as well as easing the symptoms of osteopoarthritis.
She added: "You don't need any technical equipment, just a pair of comfortable
walking shoes, a raincoat for the rain, maybe a bottle of water and you're off."
Ms Halstead added that in addition to the benefits of an improved physical condition, there are mental health advantages for those who walk a lot as well.
Those keen to
go walking more may wish to pop to their local Go Outdoors store to stock up on some gear.
A number of health benefits that walking brings have been listed on the Ramblers website.
In addition to lowering body fat and blood pressure, these include reducing cholesterol and blood lipid profile, preventing osteoporosis, improving flexibility and co-ordination and lowering the risk of cancer of the colon.
