Those keen to start their walking year off well may wish to head for Ashford-on-the Water in the Peak District on January 8th.

A five-mile trek has been organised for this date by national park rangers, starting by the village church at 11:00 GMT and continuing via Monsal Head and Great Longstone, to finish at 14:30 GMT.

With a gradual ascent and a few stiles, the walk is fairly gentle, but the authority has advised participants to bring walking boots and waterproofs, as well as a packed lunch.

Putting on such gear may be a particularly sensible and obvious thing to do as the weather could be very cold and wintry, but those who are well-equipped may enjoy a crisp day with lots of magical white scenery.

Those keen to enjoy a good walk before Christmas may want to take on a tougher hike organised by Peak District rangers, which seeks out white hares in their winter coats on December 18th.

It involves eight miles of challenging walking on Chew Moor near Oldham.
