Those looking to enjoy a weekend walking in the Lake District might wish to don their hiking boots and head up to the Ullswater Outdoor Festival, which continues this weekend with some big fell walks.

On Saturday (October 2nd), there are walks up High Hartsop Dodd via the Scandale Pass and a climb of Sheffield Pike, while those signing up to join with local adventure firm Distant Horizons can enjoy a day of scrambling and walking on Striding Edge, Helvellyn and Catstye Cam.

There will also be some interesting evening entertainment as radio DJ, author and outdoors enthusiast Stuart Maconie is appearing at the Inn on the Lake at Glenridding.

An ascent of Helvellyn via Striding Edge can be unnerving, not least as the ridge contains several monuments marking the points where people fell to their deaths.

These include the Gough memorial, which pays tribute to a dog who stayed by his master's dead body for three weeks until it was discovered.

Some of these monuments are shown on Ordnance Survey maps.
