A poll for Valentine's Day has found Glencoe to be the favourite romantic spot in the Scottish Highlands.

Those who like to mix lovehearts with hiking boots may have been among the 18 per cent who voted for the valley over 14 other locations picked by the John Muir Trust (JMT) and Walkhighlands for the survey.

Sandwood Bay and Glen Affric were second and third respectively.

JMT chairman John Hutchison said an "emotional attachment" certainly exists between many people and the Highlands.

"All kinds of wild landscape are clearly meaningful to people, from the stunning mountains of Glencoe, the vast sweep of Rannoch Moor and the remote tranquillity of Sandwood Bay," he stated.

Glencoe may be particularly popular with Munroists, with its 3,000 ft peaks including Bidean nam Bian, Stob Coire Sgreamhach, Sgorr nam Fiannaidh and Meall Dearg, with the latter two being linked by the narrow Aonach Eagach ridge.

And those looking for a romantic meal or simply a nice warm pub may enjoy the Clachaig Inn, which lies at the foot of the path up Sgorr nam Fiannaidh.
