Those who fancy taking their climbing harness with them to the Scottish Highlands could save some cash on rail trips this winter, it has been revealed.

Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCoS) members have been offered 50 per cent discounts on trains running in the Scottish Highlands between January 2nd and March 31st 2011.

This will include services on the Fort William to Mallaig, Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness to Wick and Thurso lines.

Such news was welcomed by MCoS membership development officer Mike Dales.

He noted: "Unlike the rest of the human population, mountaineers tend not to hibernate in winter. We are a group of people that travel around in search of snow covered mountains."

Those who are heading for the hills this weekend (December 18th-19th) have been warned of some serious weather conditions.

According to the Mountain Weather Information Service, the north-west Highlands will be subjected to blizzards, whiteouts and electrical storms.
