A campaign to get more people to go walking, ride mountain bikes and generally enjoy the outdoors may be about to get the public backing of the prime minister.

The Britain on Foot campaign is set to be launched in Westminster next week and Outdoor Industries Association chief executive Andrew Denton told Grough how he managed to bump into David Cameron when attending a meeting of the GREAT campaign group in Downing Street.

He said: "I was also able to mention the launch of Britain on Foot. The prime minister was charming, engaged and showed genuine interest in the project."

Politicians, outdoor leaders and the media will be present when the campaign gets its grand launch next week, which may get an extra boost if Mr Cameron offers a public endorsement.

Last month, the British Mountaineering Council announced its backing for the Britain on Foot initiative and will host the event on October 24th.
