Those looking for the right clothing to deal with the unusually harsh winter in the UK should look to their nearest outdoor shop, an expert has said.

Chief executive of the Outdoor Industries Association Louise Ramsay commented that it is "really important" people are equipped properly for going outdoors.

She said that staff in outdoor gear shops "are experts in this field and can offer outstanding guidance based on their deep experience of preparing people for all weathers".

Leading makers of men's outdoor clothing and women's outdoor clothing have reported large increases in sales as the cold weather lingers.

Regatta said its turnover was 30 per cent up in December 2009 from the same month a year before, while Berghaus brand president Richard Cotter said the sight of many TV reporters in jackets bearing the logo has helped boost sales.

Challenging weather conditions forecast for those donning walking gear in the next few days include hill fog and severe wind chill in the western highlands.
