One of the top jobs in the government is now held by a big fan of enjoying the outdoors, which may mean the interest of those who like to go walking, put on climbing shoes or get into the saddles of mountain bikes have an ally in high places.

New chief secretary to the Treasury, Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander, lives in the village of Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, which is in his constituency of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey.

In his biography he states that when he gets the chance he likes to "get out and about as much as possible to make the most of" the local area.

Before becoming an MP he was press officer for the Cairngorms National Park, which means he will be well aware of issues in the area concerning outdoor enthusiasts.

Danny Alexander was appointed secretary of state for Scotland when the coalition was formed earlier this month, before taking on his new role after David Laws resigned over an expenses issue.
