A safety campaign is being launched today (February 13th) in connection with a new app for smartphone users who like to go walking in Snowdonia, with the local member of parliament among those involved.

Even with appropriate equipment like winter jackets and crampons, those on the mountains may face various dangers in winter such as severe weather and MP Hywel Roberts is attending the event at Pen-y-Pas.

In addition to the daily weather report, the Mountain Info Services Project also includes five videos showing people how to prepare for winter walking and stay safe in the hills.

The success of the initiative will be determined by a fall in the number of mountain rescue call-outs as better informed walkers learn how to take care of themselves and their companions out on the mountains.

Recent incidents in Snowdonia include the rescue of a man walking north of Capel Curig who got lost in cloud, with his batteries having failed in both his walking GPS and mobile phone.

He had called his wife to raise the alarm, but she did not know his intended route.
