Those who like to go walking in the Grasmere area of the Lake District will still be able to stay at the Thorney Howe hostel after it was bought from the Youth Hostels Association (YHA).

It had been set to close after the YHA judged it was losing too much money last year, but chief executive of arts body Folly in Lancaster Taylor Nuttall has bought the property, which he will retain as accommodation, the Westmorland Gazette reports.

He told the paper it enables him and his wife to pursue the same career after working on different things for many years.

"We talked about running a business together and, over the past few years, we have been looking at different properties in the Lake District," Mr Nuttall stated.

It will have more of a homely comfortable feel but is also set to include more upmarket accommodation instead of just catering for the budget end of the market.

Last month saw the YHA reveal plans to shut three more Lake District youth hostels, at Derwentwater, Helvellyn and Hawkshead.
