While people typically visit the Lake District to go walking and enjoy its natural beauty, it also hosts many major events throughout the year, such as the Keswick Film Festival.

John Hurt, one of the UK's most distinguished actors, will be among those appearing at this year's event, which commenced on February 23rd and runs until the 26th.

Speaking to the Times & Star, the veteran performer revealed he often used to go on family holidays in the Lake District during his youth.

This included many hiking trips with his brother and stays on a farm in the Patterdale area.

He described the Lake District as a very "exciting" location that offers a "whole new vista" around every corner, which means it is a great place in which to go walking.

Hurt said he did not need to be persuaded to speak at this year's Keswick Film Festival when the event's artistic director first approached him, as he had not visited the Lakes for "such a long time".

"My wife has never been so we are having a bit of a holiday at the same time," he added.ADNFCR-2803-ID-801301998-ADNFCR
