A star of the TV show Gladiators is to help encourage people in one north-eastern county to put on their walking boots and enjoy the outdoors.

The Ramblers initiative Get Walking Keep Walking Durham is being backed by Jet - also known as Diane Youldale.

It is aimed at people who would otherwise be at risk of developing heart disease due to their sedentary lifestyle and those taking up walking in the area may find they soon get the bug for it and go on to become outdoor regulars.

The initiative will be launched at Barnard Castle in a family fun day on March 6th.

Jet said: "Walking is a great way to take those first steps to a healthier lifestyle. It can help you lose weight, improve your fitness and importantly make you feel fantastic."

The north-east of England offers two national parks for walkers to enjoy, the North York Moors and Northumberland, which were designated in 1952 and 1956 respectively.
