Those planning to go walking in Devon may find an alternative to its two national parks in the shape of the Exe valley, which those buying walking boots might wish to explore.

Although it flows from the high moors in the heart of the county, the river also offers attractive landscapes lower down as it approaches the sea at Exmouth, the BBC Country File programme revealed on Sunday (December 12th).

Presenters Julia Bradbury and Adam Henson profiled this area, which may appeal to those keen on a low-level walk during the colder months before heading for the uplands when it is warmer and the daylight hours are longer.

Those who do fancy a winter trek on Dartmoor can still enjoy some ranger-led walks this winter.

Among these is a three-hour hike starting at 14:00 GMT on New Year's Eve, which will witness the final sunset of 2010 from the summit of Haytor.
