The Ramblers has written to every local authority in the country to request they do not neglect public rights of ways as they trim their budgets, as this would make it hard for some to go walking.

It has said councils balancing the books by reducing spending on paths could leave them in the same poor state they newer in during the 1960s and argued some people will stop using rights of way altogether if they become hard to walk down.

Commenting on the issue Ramblers chief executive Tom Franklin said: "Cutting back on rights of way work will not only have a far-reaching impact on revenue generated by local businesses but on the progress made by walking for health initiatives."

The body is involved in an ongoing campaign over the issue and recently joined forces with the Kennel Club, which is keen that dog owners can still walk their pets.
