What are the different types of horse-riding boots?

There are numerous variations of riding boots. When referred to as an overall, they are typically called equestrian boots. These different kinds of boots have all been made to suit different equestrian specialities, disciplines, and purposes, often named after the material used to construct the boot.

Jodhpur & Paddock Boots – The defining feature of the jodhpur or paddock boots is that they are short, usually ankle height. These are the perfect choice for beginners as they are easy to break in and are much easier to find the right fit - ideal for everyday riding and work around the stable.

The downside is that being shorter, these boots offer little protection to the lower legs. The paddock variation is considered less professional in certain equestrian fields, so it’s important to know your chosen discipline’s rules and regulations before purchasing.

Field Boots – Tall boots that reach below the knee designed specifically for show jumping and eventing fitted with a sleek, polished look usually implemented with laces across the boot.

Dress Boots – Whilst sharing similarities to the field boot, the dress boot is defined by being constructed with a smoother leather, with a stiff shaft to provide an appropriate elegant look for competition. The standard is for these boots to be either black or brown.

Why do you have to wear specialised boots when riding a horse?

Riding boots are usually worn for several reasons that relate to safety, protection, and comfort.

One of the most uncomfortable sensations many riders experience is chafing. Chafing is a skin irritation that can be caused by repeated skin-to-skin, skin-to-clothing contact that can cause painful red marks or bruises. How should my boots fit?

It is important that riding boots fit tightly and follow the shape of your leg. Your boots should fit around the ankle and leg without causing any issues with circulation. It is important that you have your boots fitted as if they move around, they can cause your legs to move, giving you less control. The back of your heel should sit firmly against the back of your boot without causing discomfort, for example.
