So close - but irritating niggles

This is a good looking and well put together bag - for the price - superb.

Mine has been skiing, done a week of cross country ski-touring in the arctic and many hikes in the heat in Hong Kong.

Sadly I can’t be sure this was properly tested by the designers.

1) As mentioned in the other reviews - the frame in the back takes up far too much space. It also makes the bag a pain to pack into a hold-all (I use a berghaus leviathan 70 and i manage to squash it into the top, or strap it to the outside)

2)...having this issue meant I chose to put it in the hold for the flights to Norway. It arrived minus the chest strap - because it’s just clipped around a type rather than strapped around.

3) I would have gladly paid another few £’s for it to have extended padding around the waist - with pockets for small items.

It’s a great bag though. I’ve never found it uncomfortable - and I say this about to take it to the Himalayas for a week of trekking.

Worth the money - absolutely.

Would I spend a bit more next time? Yes I would.

Great price, poor design

Hard to complain because this was such a cheap buy, and I could easily have spent at least double on a better quality product. However, the flawed design make me wish I had never bought it.
The X frame which is bowed to keep the pack away from your back takes up half the space inside the pack meaning it holds a lot less than it looks like it should, and is particularly unsuited to my hydration bladder which is quite stiff and doesn't fit well around the bowed back. Add a few more things inside and it starts to straighten out the frame, but instead of just flattening out there is a bulky plastic 'hinge' bit in the middle which gets pushed out and makes a hard lump that digs in to the middle of your back. Hence you can't really stuff very much at all into the pack - at least not nearly as much as a pack that size should take.
The other main problem is the hip belt which is thin and not padded around most of its length. It gets quite uncomfortable after a while, and the buckle seems to creep so it slides down slowly and you need to keep hitching it up.
I bought this specifically for lightweight wild camping and took a one-man tent, a one-season bag, an extra layer and a little food (not much stuff at all). At the end of a day's hike my hips were sore from the belt, my shoulders sore from the belt slipping and putting weight on them, and my back sore from the big plastic hinge digging into it every time I bent over.
Sadly, the price is great and if it wasn't for the stupidly designed frame it would be a perfectly good buy for the money. However, I cannot recommend it and wish I had gone for something else.

OEX Vallo 35

It is a nice bag but is really let down by the waist strap. The waist strap does not offer support, and therefore loads all the weight onto the shoulders (therefore defeating its purpose).

I bought it as a daypack for going to crags. Used it for a week. Its size and layout is perfect, but unfortunately within 10 min of walking it becomes very uncomfortable. I now have a nice new bag that I dont really want to use again. I would not recommend buying.

Valle 35

Bought as a cragging pack. Holds enough & has useful features (rope - holding strap, stretchy pocket that fits guidebook), but insufficient/nonexistent padding at the base of the metal frame would turn a day carrying a load into torture (fine for 20 mins)

Brilliant at £30!

I bought this bag in the 'wow' sale for a very reasonable £30.
First impressions were good, it's lightweight, has a hip and waist strap and enough adjustment to fine tune a comfortable fit for a day on your back.
After using the bag though I have a few observations.
The bag is not waterproof, perhaps it could withstand a very light shower but the water does seep through and your belongings will be damp. I found this out after discovering that the bag does not have a rain cover. It's obviously not something that's essential but for a hiking day bag I'd have quite liked a pocket somewhere containing a raincover.
There is no clip anywhere inside any pocket to clip your keys to. Again, it's not essential, but I'd have liked the option.
The x-bridge system they use to keep your back cool is a nice feature however the arc of this X does take a little bit of load space from the main compartment which makes loading/unloading a little bit more tricky, especially if you're using the bag with a hydration bladder.
It does have a large zipped pocket which allows access into the main compartment of the bag which is very useful and securing a hydration bladder into the bag is also nice and easy with two Velcro tabs inside the bag.
All in all I think for the price this bag is excellent. The only reason it's not got the full 5 stars are for Afew little things as mentioned above.

Very very good value for money

I have bought a lot of OEX kit, and when I heard the range was expanding, naturally I was excited. So off I went to check out what was new.
Whilst in the store, I picked up a few bits, one being this, the Valo 35.
A perfect sized day pack, or a lightweight pack for overnights.
It feels very sturdy and being a slightly larger build man, adjusts nicely to give a comfortable fit. The materials used all feel durable, and it certainly will take a downpour of rain no bother
Pleanty of pockets around it for storing all your bits and bobs.
Very happy with it indeed
