Not mittens - gloves!

Was really disappointed with these so called mittens. The reason I wanted a pair of mittens was because, despite them being rather impractical, when your fingers are together they are warmer. These, however, are gloves inside! So in fact I now have separated cold fingers with all the inconvenience of a mitten - feel miss-sold and very disappointed.

North Ridge Mitts

Just bought the mitts today and always read reviews before I buy. Went into the Edinburgh store to buy Montane Extreme mitts at about £28. However, the size I wanted were out of stock. So looked at the North Ridge mitt reduced from £70 to £37. I liked the fact that they are advertised as waterproof where the Montane are not. Lovely features like the inner glove with 5 fingers and the leather palm, the draw pull to tighten at the wrist. Also long enough to cover the jacket cuff. By the way Andrew - previous review - the blue string is so that the glove can be secured to your wrist when you take the gloves off to check the compass or eat/drink something and not leave them lying there on the ground when resuming a climb. I've done this. I'll be trying them out on the next Munro climb shortly in winter conditions and will leave an update. Lastly, there was a sign that stated a further 20% off gloves and mitts - I found out that it didn't apply to sale items - but the manager agreed to give the discount in this case. Well done and super price at £29. This sort of service is why I continue to shop at Go Outdoors.

Warm in the Dry

Been using these for a while.

Used them biking (MTB) and also in Scotland and the Lake district on multi-day hikes

If it is dry, and your hands start warm they are quite a good glove.
They do keep your hands warm, and in light rain are waterproof.

However take them out in high wind and persistent continuous driving rain, and they eventually wet through.
Then they take an age to dry because the leather gets wet, and once the inner gets damp, there is nowhere for the damp to easily go.
Add to this the fact that they have built in finger inner that you cannot get out, then the downside is that once your hands get wet and cold then these begin to fail badly.
Also because of the fingers, it is hard to get your hands into them once they are damp.

They are well made, but they do not really function as a wet weather walking glove.

They also have that strange dangling blue strap that I am sure is intended to stop them blowing away or falling to the ground, but it is just plain annoying.

I think they may well be quite good as a skiing glove as long as your hands stay warm.
Once they are cold it is impossible to get them warm again in these gloves.

As a walking glove in my opinion as someone who has done a lot of hill walking in all conditions they are just not up to the job.

And they do not come in cheap.

The biggest problem is that they are trying to be BOTH gloves and Mits.

BUT.. Mitts are Mitts and Gloves are Gloves, and these are not a great combination.

Buy proper Mitts, or Buy proper Gloves.

Some others may like them

But they are definitely not for me.
Even at the discounted price.
