I had seen the Montane Icarus, while searching for a replacement for my well loved Craghopper, which I got caught on barbed wire fence while doing some night photography. It's an eye catching jacket in Firefly Orange, which I like. I tried on a few jackets in the Inverness store, but always came back to the Icarus. It fits well, yes it's snug, but I'm happy with that as I don't want to snag this one on barbed wire. I also don't want it catching on my tripod while out taking aurora shots at night, so it's a good fit for me.
This week, we had some terrible wind and rain, so I donned the Icarus to see how it performed. I'm happy to say that once I had got up to walking temperature, my core remained nice and warm, not too hot, my arms were well protected, although not as warm as my torso. Wind resistance is excellent, the hood, which was a factor in me buying the Icarus, is a snug fit and insulates the head well. Nothing worse than buying a jacket with a hood designed to be worn over a helmet, when you don't wear a helmet, then battling the elements to try and keep your hood in place.
I didn't have any issues with rain penetrating the jacket, which is a bonus. Although I would describe the fit as snug, the build of the jacket offers good articulation, with no restrictions on arm movement.
All in, I'm really happy with this jacket. It performs well beyond the price point and is great value.
Love it.
Excellent coat perfect for what I need it for, and at a great price
Last week, I used this jacket for the first time in the Brecon Beacons. Wearing the Icarus on top of two thin layers, I felt super warm against the 60kmph winds on the major peaks. It withstood the heavy, horizontal and persistent freezing showers; although my left arm did start to feel slightly cold after a while.
In essence, an excellent jacket which has done me proud!
Brilliant jacket really warm and lightweight. So comfy to wear I would definitely buy another.
I've always been a supporter of Montane clothing and have always liked the designs and fit. I was in the market for a new jacket and this immediately caught my eye. I did a fair bit of research into it prior to buying it to ensure that it fit my needs. After purchase I've been nothing but impressed with its features and abilities in various environments. It's great at keeping the wind out and the filling is great at regulating my temperature. I've not had an issue with transitions between indoors and outdoors and becoming overheated whilst indoors. It also handles some rain well too. Overall this is a great jacket for those weekend walks or something more substantial and in my mind beats its competitors hands down and has definitely continued my support for Montane.
Just love my new Montana Icarus jacket.
Cosy and warm for winter - tailored fit and design features make it much better than cheaper types.
No better than my Mountain equipment jacket that cost £45 aside from the pockets and style. Was expecting it to be much warmer...
Many a weekend stood in the cold watching my son play football, this coat means I’ll never freeze again! Well made and looks good. Went in to buy a Rab but saw this, I’m not disappointed.
Montane have become one of my favourite brands thanks to the high quality of their garments. This coat is no exception and is fashionable enough for the pub yet practical enough for the hills.
It is a bit small in fitting as another review said, it is ideal in cold dry conditions.
Great jacket if you are looking for something that; a) is warm but not as warm as a full on thick insulated jacket, b) is not Down - synthetic has its benefits in a cold wet British winter, c) packs down quite small - although you will have to provide your own stuff sack.
Bear in mind that the sizing is a bit of a joke - Extremely skimpy. I usually wear a size L (and sometimes a size M - depending on the brand). I had to go up to a XL, (and seriously considered an XXL) in order to be able to wear more than on layer under it. And its a shame that you don't get a small stuff sack for packing it in to go in your back pack etc (or a pocket that it can be stuffed into like my other Montane jacket). That would make it 5*
Bought this without actually realising it is not a true down jacket but synthetic. It was an impulse purchase as I liked the look of it very much.
I travel internationally with work and put it though some awful weather in Iceland (horrific winds) and also on a weekend away in Poland were it was -8c.
I never felt cold, damp and it truly is 100% wind resistant.
The only negative comment is the hood, makes your head look like a box when up. The elastic hugs your face perfectly allowing no cold to pass.
I thought it might be too early to write this but given the weather of late that is not the case. I have used this jacket while doing proper dales walking and walking the dog and have found it excellent in all conditions. My one criticism is the very snug fit - normally a size L fits me but this L is a bit tight - I would have preferred it to be a bit looser as with more than one layer under it’s on the tight side. That does not detract from its overall comfort though. An excellent winter jacket.
Bought this for my partner, very happy with the jacket.
really great valve for money, looks amazing on, good fit as we struggle for jackets with him being tall, definitely would recommend this jacket.
For the price can’t complain. Not going to keep you massively warm in freezing weather but great jacket to throw on with layers. Good fit, comfortable to wear and not too bulky. Good colours as well.
Yeah it's a good jacket to go to shops or any activity that doe's not involve walking much. Spend 2 hours walking by the coast this morning and i was absolutely steaming. This jacket is 100% non breathable , when i got home i was absolutely soaking in my own sweat, even my phone was all covered in sweat. Not recommending this jacket buy something else if you want to spend your day active. £120 down to drain. Absolute ****
Great jacket, always been pleased with Montane kit and was not disappointed with this jacket. As other reviews could have had a stuff sack to pack away but being picky. Excellent when belaying and when doing general outdoors stuff. Warm but need a layers when the temperature drops very low. Recommend it.
Tested this jacket out on the Kentmere Horseshoe in dreadfully cold conditions with a decent chilling wind. With just a Rab Long sleeve Base layer and T shirt, this was more than enough to keep me warm. I tend to sweat on the bigger routes so breathability is important to me. This was good but not brilliant (I put this down to me rather than the fabric)!! Its an incredibly warm jacket for the very light weight which is hard to put your faith in at first as it feels you're wearing very little, but warm it is and I'm more than happy with this purchase for colder days on the fells. Its windproof ability is also extremely effective. Happy customer but as with most Montane gear the sizings are odd. I normally wear a L or XL with run of the mill clothing/jackets but needed and XXXL Montane jacket but this has never stopped me being a fan of their gear.
Great jacket, excellent fit,, and extremely comfortable. Only minor criticism is the zip is a little fiddly and this is the only thing that drops it a 'star'.
Purchased many Montane items over the years and this like all there other kit is first class, was contemplating a similar type Rab which If I'm honest was good and I own lot's of Rab gear too but this just fitted me better without any pull toggles
Spent four days in the Brecon Beacons wild camping last week using this and a couple of layers and have to say it has exceeded my expectation both daytime and in particular late in to the evening. I do tend to run cold and always take a down jacket, funnily enough that is also a Montane however it actually wasn't needed as I had on a base layer, Mountain Equipment Hoodie and this Icarus jacket and was toasty warm
Second and third day drizzled on and off most of the day but only twice put on my Gore-Tex as this shakes off showers brilliantly well and no doubt re-proofing regularly will keep it beading up and keeping you dry and warm
I also like the fact that this does everything a light down jacket does without the fuss of careful washing as It is obviously synthetic fill, 100% recommend this jacket and the fit is awesome for most activities
