'Lifetime' guarantee is a sales gimmick. 4 years is a lifetime?!

I have been wearing Berghaus products for most of my life. My previous waterproof lasted well over 20 years of regular use in the mountains and around town. It was brilliant. I take care of my kit but also it has never been subjected to 'extreme' use.

At New Year 2013/4 I finally had to replace my jacket and bought a Mera Peak. It has seen service on Snowdon and Ben Nevis as well as on the coast and around town. It has performed well although there were always features of its predecessor that I missed. The design means that water or snow can sit in the entrance to the zip pockets and so leak inside.

Late last year I started to have problems with the main zip after less than 4 years. The jacket finally failed me on holiday in Austria. Fortunately I had my ski jacket to fall back on to.

Now we come to the rub. Berghaus' lifetime guarantee is, of course, referring to the lifetime of the product. Berghaus are selling disposable clothing not expected to last 4 years. In our increasingly eco-friendly world I find this unacceptable. I am left with a choice of paying nearly £50 for a quality repair (1/5 of the price of the jacket) or buying a new jacket. I have chosen the latter. I will not be buying Berghaus again. I don't write reviews immediately but wait until the product has been thoroughly tested. Look out in a few years time to see what jacket I bought and how it performed. For example Scarpa who recently repaired my 25 year old boots (in Italy) without charge.

In summary, Berghaus' lifetime guarantee is a cheap marketing trick and, it seems, that the quality of the product has declined. Not what you expect when paying over £200 for a jacket. Hopefully the competition will do better.

Berghaus Mera Peak 5.0

Having owned several of the Mera Peak jackets over the years , I can honestly say, this is the best yet.
Firstly, the construction is far better, better quality zips and more pockets of a useful size.
Good is great with plenty of space in it.
Overall fit is great too.

Mera peak 5.0

Absolutely the best jacket I've owned. Really functional and looks great. Breathability is ok, pit zips work great when you start to work harder. This jacket feels like it could handle much more inclement weather than the UK could dish out. Haven't yet tried it on extended backpacking trips in really prolonged downpours, but I expect as with other goretex products, I suspect breathability would suffer when the face fabric gets sodden.

Pros: Cut is nice, fits well. Feels and looks well made. Lifetime guarantee on zips etc. Well placed pockets. Good collar system.

Negatives: Expensive(ish). Not a fan of hood volume adjuster (although it works and is easy to use with one hand). Would prefer an old school wired peak.

One the whole an excellent purchase, would definitely recommend.
