Great idea, poor design as rings broke

used for first time at wk’end.

Downside - footprint is not fitted so water gets in everywhere.
Rings on guy rope broke on first night in slight breeze
Footprint does not fit in awning

Great addition in good weather

Added valuable space to the Icarus which made a difference. However, it caused us a lot of problems in wet windy conditions and collapsed many times with rain flooding through gaps where it joined.

Good space but totally broke on first use.

This was great in terms of space but Day 3 of first use and the wind completely broke this off and it ripped/poles snapped so unable to use again. Totally gutted as it gave us living space well needed with a family of 4.

love it

Was a bit iffy about buying this because wasnt really sure about the price .but now i have love it ,makes the tent so much bigger and if its raining which it did when we went used it as a kitchen +storage area with table and chairs so there was loads of room for a small table and comfy chairs in main tent was like a small house excellent go outdoors love it x

Great addition to our Icarus 500

Adds an extra bit of space to the tent, meaning we have somewhere to sit and cook on rainy days without treading mud into the tent!

The groundsheet is detachable which is a great feature - we usually leave it out as this is our "muddy area" where we leave our boots and coats.

We bought this for £160 and a few days later it was on sale for £50 less. Go Outdoors refunded the difference with no argument or hassle.

A Gotta Have !!

Title says it all , if you buy the tent then you gotta have the porch !! Invaluable piece of kit giving so much extra space for cooking or living in ! Fully enclosed if necessary !

Vango Icarus porch

Recently purchased this porch for our vango Icarus 500 for a trip to Cornwall, it made a whole lot of difference to the tent ?? much more living space ideal for a large table and chairs. Good sturdy construction. Would recommend it to anyone who has the Vango Icarus 500

Big except on design

This adds a good space to the Icarus tent but three drawbacks :
No footprint available - Not a massive issue.
Impossible to eliminate large gaps where awning overlaps the tent - a fairly important issue as gets draughty and cold.
The doorway slopes away from you at the top when entering from outside. This is a massive issue unless you are over 6 feet tall or have unusually long arms because it is difficult to reach the zips to either open fully or to close. It also means rain has a better chance of entering the doorway and even the rain that runs off collects right in front of the door.

The other effect of this which we found frustrating when the weather was bad is that the awning could not be opened up to allow cooking with a gas stove because there is no poles supplied to enable the door flap to be turned into a porch.

Room to swing a cat... if I was cat person

Despite being branded for the Icarus it seems to fit the majority of the 5 man exceed series providing your height and width are narrower than the awning. I 'married' it to a padstow 500 with no issue - simply over lapped the porch, clipped the sides to the 2nd pole loop. The back of the extension is a large elasticated roof panel that sits snugly and retained by two tension straps to the next pole loop. It creates a seriously good space - enough for 4 to dine in + kitchen area + generous storage all with standing height. Remember it's an extension awning and despite having a ground sheet it's free at the edges so can get a bit flappy in strong winds - guy it well and maybe put some extra eyelets in the skirt and nail it down. Some folk seem to have had problems with drippage from the door zips - yep 40mph driving rain it did drip... it also stayed upright. Seriously if it needs to be properly dry it lives in the tent and let's keep it in perspective it's an add on to a family tent not a four season mountain job.
I'm impressed, the wife's impressed. A cost effective modular approach to tenting allowing space expansion when required.

*top marks to the Taunton branch - good honest customer service!

Ripped apart on second time using

Fantastic extra space. However, not really suitable for Scotland and possible breezy (not unusual!) conditions. Large rip partly due to poor design plus poor stitching, and a clip unstitched from the awning fabric on the front pole. Also split pole. Returned to store, no problem getting tent and awning refunded

Twice the size - twice the fun?

We had used our Icarus 500 for family of 4 + big dog for 2 summers and felt the porch a bit snug kit storage wise on anything longer than a couple of nights (the dog bed taking a huge amount of groundsheet). This awning effectively doubles the length of the tent, or trebles the porch area - depending how you want to look at it. We did have fun with our trial pitching the description was not completely clear but soon got the awning attached to the middle hoop not the front one (silly mistake and obvious when you look at it). end result is plenty of space. the front door angle is still one likely to give you drips occasionally, and I'm not a great fan of plastic windows as over time they perish faster than the main canvas, but this awning is a reasonable price and gives the space needed for a growing family to spend a greater number of nights away. Our main tent is the old blue colour, the awning is green, but they marry up fine and now give us a two-tone appearance

Icarus 500

Got this extension because the Icarus 500 tent is badly designed at the door sloping outward so all the rain comes in and hasn't a zip at the bottom so puts up the extension only to find exactly the same rains in at the door and not seen in ground sheet so rains in everywhere the whole tent and extension a waste of money

Great addition to Vango Icarus 500

This a great addition to the Vango Icarus 500 which is already a generously sized family tent but wit this awning becomes really spacious. We have just used it for the first time on a 3 night trip to Dorset. We used it as a cooking, eating and daytime seating area and found it made the tent feel really large.
My only criticism would be that the groundsheet is not integral and so, on the two nights when it rained, we woke up to puddles in the porch area

Vango Icarus 500 Awning

Great piece of kit. Turns a good tent into a great tent. Love it.
It does however not like high winds (70mph) and last weekend it ripped away from the tent. That didn't put us off and went and bought a replacement awning as soon as we got back. A must for families like ours who have messy kids
