Love this super light weight but toastie warm coat a great find!
Do you know I had never heard of this jacket before I bought it, since then I have noticed 3 other people wearing and even spotted someone been interviewed on BBC Breakfast wearing one - though they weren't talking about it!
Ok I was told in the store that this jacket is worn by UK Mountain Rescue teams so that was a major selling point, if it's good enough for them...
So I have just returned from a week in Iceland wearing this jacket every day. We experienced snow, blizzards, -5 temperatures and 110mph winds. This stood the test. Yes sometimes it was worn with an outer windproof/waterproof jacket but it kept me warm,
I am a photographer and wore this on Diamond Beach photographing the ice with the cold wind whipping in off the sea and combined with thermal layers I was toasty and able to concentrate on the job in hand. I found it also allowed me easy movement.
One day I wore it as part of a layered system for skiing and I found I was very comfortable, not cold and by no means too hot either.
Been a baldie one of the features I really like is how the hood fits around my head. I can turn my head and it moves with me and I don't end up just peering into the side of the hood. The peak is also ideal. Only comment I would make is it is a bit noisy inside with the material rustling which made it difficult to hear what people were saying to me, especially in strong winds.
I like how it packs down into it's own right hand pocket and it fits snuggly inside the top compartment of my camera bag without bulk or weight. It is very light.
There is only one thing I have noticed which after a week of wearing it I am noticing fibres from the fill poking out of seams - something I will keep my eye on.
This jacket is going to be my new long time companion for general dog walks, countryside walks and landscape and dog photography in all weathers.
This is a must have, so go and get.
I'm slightly surprised the jacket receives such good reviews. Maybe I just haven't worked out yet how to incorporate it into my layering system.
I didn't find it warm enough in Scotland's mountains in May when I was hoping it would warm me up over a base+fleece. I've also found it hard to vent the heat when I'm too warm - and I definitely do not want to regulate by having to constantly put on and take off a fleece underneath. I've probably been spoilt with my Buffalo Mountain Shirt.
Regarding fit, the Prism would suit those with barrel chests, otherwise it's too baggy round the middle. The problem with "baggyness" is that it's much less warm than a tighter fitting garment, but the looseness feels unsatisfactory too. On the plus side, the sleeves are long so reaching up doesn't expose your wrists or lift the jacket too much. And the hood is superb.
The best outdoor jacket I own. Used for lounging around the house to save on the heating, watching children's football in the great British weather, going to the pub, oh and walking.
This weekend (early Jan), we "walked" up Blencathra. Sheet ice on top, howling gale (literally gale force wind), well below freezing. I wore this jacket with a merino t-shirt underneath and was absolutely fine.
You'll only understand how good these are until you've bought one so just get on with it.
I had this as a Christmas present. I have used it nearly everyday walking walking around 10 miles a day in the great Welsh weather ?? Safe to say this jacket is outstanding.
had this jacket around 6 months and couldn't recommended it enough. Its even starting to become a daily jacket. It's ideal for walking in temperatures around 0-12 if its a little colder i just throw a fleece underneath. I have seen some comments with the zip but i've never had an issue
Lightweight. Warm. That’s what I looking for.
I bought this jacket an year ago and Im loving it. I can say that it is my most used jacket, I use it a lot for dog walking, hiking, town etc. Its pretty warm for temperatures around 0 to 12C, if it freezes then it is too cold for this jacket, then it can be used as a mid layer. Zip is also fine, I never had any problems with it. The adjustable hood is also great by strong winds and I also like the elasticated cuffs around the wrists. And now things that I dont like about this jacket: first is the lentht, Im 192cm tall and this jacket in size Xl is just too short, I dont know if in UK are living only midgets ;) 1,7m tall, but its too short, and the second thing that I dont like is that it isn't as breathable as I would like, for dog walking it is alright but if I move faster for more than 15-20 minits, then I'll start to sweat really fast, but it is still ok, because the primaloft keeps you warm even if you are wet. Other than that it's the best jacket that I bought so far.
I've had this jacket for 2 yrs now and have to say its probably the most versatile jacket i own, and i have a few believe me,some reviews say the zip is dodgy if not put together properly, i say then put it together properly !!,cant say I've EVER had a problem with the zip, defo my go to jacket, either used as an outer shell or a mid layer on wet days under a waterproof shell.
Buy it you wont regret it, there's a reason its not been discontinued by Montane,
I needed a lightweight but warm jacket for local hill walking and have found this jacket to be ideal - lightweight, warm and easily stowed in my rucksack. Very impressed with Montane.
Bought this jacket and am really pleased with it. Keeps me dry in a light shower, really warm and lightweight. Was going to wear this running but it would have to be a very cold day for this.
Bought this for a hill walking trip to the Peaks and I found it to be fantastic! Dries quickly, keep me dry enough in a shower or two, windproof, light, warm and folds away in to it's own pocket which is not mega small but still small enough to stuff away in you day sack! For the money, I can highly recommend this jacket!
Excellent buy and well pleased...both stylish and warm
Nice light, warm jacket. If layering with micro fleece and base top/t-shirt this will do the job for most UK situations. As mentioned before though the zip is dodgy - sometimes won't zip properly if bottom parts aren't fully connected (easily done) then a real pain to get undone.
If a £20 quid garment can get that right then there's no excuse for a £100 jacket not to.
Great jacket for cool weather in the borders BUT the main zip is a pain at times if you don't insert it correctly before pulling it up and it opens up on you and then you need to forcibly yank to separate the zip to start again. The zip could be a bit larger and better quality to earn five stars
I've had this jacket just over a year and I have to say it's warm, lightweight and more than adequate for my use i.e Sunday morning football, cycling to shops and general wear. What's not so good is the zips. You need to be very careful with the main zip that the two ends are fully inserted before zipping up. A couple of times now I've zipped it up only to find that it's come apart at the bottom. I've been lucky and manged to zip the zipper back down. The pockets on the other hand have been a nightmare! The zip gets snagged in the lining and got stuck. The last time the left one for stuck in lining whilst I was trying to retrieve my passport for security control. I had to force it open and the zip completely gave way and is now broke. The problem is the zips are cheap plastic and low quality. Not what I would expect from Montane. Would I the jacket again? Unfortunately the answer is no. Shame as the jacket itself is nice and warm and comfortable but let down by cheap quality zips!
This is an ok jacket. I have found I have to really have to think about layering when wearing it.I have not been impressed by it's thermal quality for its size( compared to much thinner garments I have) and for the cost there are better jackets available. It is not a go to jacket for expeditions for me, more of dog walking in mid autumn. I like its pacability but as I said it doesn't come with me on expeditions so haven't needed to. The hood would fit a helmet well. The pokers fit hands with gloves well and the zippers have great tabs for use with gloves.
As I said an Ok jacket.
As all previous reviewers. A very light and warm jacket.
BE ADVISED THAT THE PICTURE OF THE JACKET STUFFED INTO THE RIGHT POCKET IS SHOWING IT AS BLUE, WHEN IT SHOULD BE ORANGE FROM THE INNER LINING.
Great quality lightweight packable jacket , not totally waterproof but water resistant to a point
