Wouldn't be without it!, 02 October 2015
By Stogursey (Somerset)
There is a benefit to this converter that no one else has mentioned!

I regularly go on camping trips to Europe and North America and since flying with fuel is a no-no, the first thing to do on arrival is to stock up with food and fuel for the stove - compatible gas cylinders are available in every outdoor store and many larger supermarkets - but try and track down meths! You first have to work out what the Americans call meths and then find somewhere that stocks it.

On top of that, I find that a trangia fitted with a gas burner is much easier to control, faster and cleaner (no risk of contaminating the stove or anything else with the smell of meths). I don't bother with the trangia kettle as you can boil water in one of the pans, in which case I can fit both the burner and the handle inside the stove for transport.

People have commented that you have to carry a gas cylinder but that's no worse than a Sigg fuel bottle filled with meths.

In short, since buying the gas burner, I've never used meths in my stove and can't think of any reason why I would.

Very Hot, 11 May 2015
By Ironside (Milton Keynes)
I bought this for use when camping out of the car, performs better than meths and on a Trangia 27 it will boil the kettle in around two minutes. But beware compared to the meths burner this is a jet engine, when I went to pickup the kettle it had melted the handle. This resulted in burns to my fingers so be aware when using it is very powerful bit of kit. I have only given five stars as I am not impressed with the damage to my kettle and the burns to my fingers, but the burner is very good.

Basecamp luxury, 26 February 2013
By Brotzie (Essex)
I endorse most everything Llandifan said - except I haven't noticed any tendency to damage or issues with assembly. I transport mine coiled inside the kettle, which seems to protect it well - but it probably wouldn't fit in the smaller T27 version.

You can see in the picture that the gas feed tube loops up through the flame jet, so it preheats and vapourises properly in cold temperatures - a good design feature that you normally only see on petrol-burners.

Get the biggest gas canisters you can - we use 440s or 880s - for convenience. They'll last for days of cooking, especially if you're experienced in cooking efficiently on the stock meths-burner.

And the safety label DOES get in the way, so - naughty boy that I am - I cut mine off. Not recommended if you're buying for groups or you've got an eye to resale down the line.

Touring light on a bike, 09 July 2012
By llandifan (Basingstoke)
bought this as an alternative to my meths burner, used to use one that was multifuel, but this is better and cleaner to use.
Pros:
Better than meths cleaner than the petrol version reliable and durable
Cons;
Can't keep fuel in stove with burner as before
Safety Lable makes getting valve through hole in body awkward
Stainless spring and alloy flash plate easy to dislocate and therefore make assembly fiddly
have noticed a tendancy to suffer damage.
need seperate gas canister
Do not use the small 100g canisters
I now carry the meths stove filled with meths as a back up as on one occasion didn't pack a spare canister and half warmed beans and sausages in a bag is worse than cold :-(
super efficient but boy it can burn gas at high altitude and low pressure, combined cooking processes save fuel, boil food in the bag use the water to make your drink, not always palatable :-(

Trangia Gas Converter!, 28 January 2010
By chizinbungay (Rillington)
I had been using Methylated spirits in my trangia for a good while, when the school that I often work with on Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions purchased gas converters for all of their trangia's. I was sceptical at first because they seemed a lot of money for what they were but I am now a regular user of one myself and would not go out without it. Gas burns hotter, and boils water much quicker than meths but it is also really lightweight and fits nicely inside the saucepan or kettle. The school took them to Ecuador and they worked very well at altitude also. The only issue I have found with them is over time if not handled carefully, and students are not always the most careful, the metal pipe can leak at either end and in one instance the gas control tap caught fire on top of the gas bottle. Definitely not a major design floor however just not treated properly. Certainly all in all much more convenient than meths and I would not go back to meths now! A worth while extra purchase if you are investing in a new trangia!
