If you're going for sandals, get yourself some Tevas. They are so much more than just something to wear on the beach. The whole design is geared at making them rugged and grippy enough to master some rougher terrain. They also grab the foot really well so that you have excellent contact with the sole. Padding is quite good so you'd have to walk quite a distance to build up some sores. It has happened to me, but my skin is not really used to sandals and some time into the summer I always develop the necessary toughness.
