Scarpa ZG65 XCR boots

I was looking for a lightweight boot that had a sole tough enough to provide grip and foot placements when scrambling. The Scarpa looked like a good option to try. They certainly are light, being about the same weight as my Salomon Revos but the uppers on the Scarpas look like they would take more abuse. The stiff sole unit and aggresive lug patterns certainly seem to take rocky stuff in their stride and I’ve used these boots scrambling up Cneiffon arête in Snowdonia. The sole is stiff enough to stand on small foot holds and you don’t feel the rocks and stones, on say rough descents, like you might with lighter boots.

Having a Gore Tex lining means that although they have fabric rather than leather uppers they still offer excellent waterproof protection. In my opinion waterproof liners don’t seem to make boots more sweaty than if they don’t have a liner (good socks are needed though). Although the liners do seem to wear out and leak after a fair bit of use.

My only real gripe is that they aren’t as comfortable as other boots I use. The padding on the foot bed is very unforgiving so a decent inner sole is needed if you’ve got delicate feet like me. This can lead to problems if the heel is raised up by the inner sole as it can move the heel out of the space provided for this part of the foot in the boot. The fit is also quite narrow which is good for scrambling if it’s good for your own foot size.

All in all if it fits your foot and you find them comfortable enough then they are superb boots for year round use on trails and scrambles too.
