The Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX
is the latest update of one of their most popular hiking shoes, with a sleek new design and re-shaped toe bumper.

I love these shoes, 13 February 2017
By Scottw (Lancashire)
I personally love these shoes. Now there are definitely mixed reviews for these. I find this especially true of people who have owned the salomon xa pro 3d goretex shoes.
I'm size 9 and have a narrow foot. I got for my normal size. Although these are tight to begin with they loosen and fit very well after some wear. The narrow fit may not be for everyone so I recommend you try them on in store. I've owned my first pair for about a year now. Give them some pretty serious abuse. Wearing them for work 6 days a week 7-8 hous mainly outdoors for mostrich that time. They did get too hot in summer especially down in Devon. But it's breathable goretex so that's understandable. The style looks great the insides are still amazing, I had to replace the insoles recently but they were great whist they lasted. The style looks great and the lace system is so quick and easy. They are very comfortable and don't slip on the heel. The soles are hardwaring but will wear down quicker on concrete etc. The reinforced heel section and toe area is great and have taken some abuse when kneeling on toe. Also love the extended rear to help take these off. They are waterproof obviously but does deteriate with time. I haven't washed and tried to reproof so can't comment on if that works. I would say they were 100% waterproof for about 8 months of hard use which I think is good.
The lace system does loose tightness over the day however I didn't find this too much hassle as only needs adjusting about once a day. The insoles are great but wear pretty quickly as are soft. I replaced mine at about 10 months. The most annoying issue I'very found is that the lace eyes each side of the shoe are metal apart from the last two nearest you're toes. These are material. Due to this taking just as much pressure and friction these have worn considerably. I'm not sure when but it will likely snap through at some point. I may try some normal laces or try to bypass these bottom ones with a knot in the quick lace system. The lace system has also burnt through the tounge due to friction (this hasnt gone thriugh to the goretex liner yet though).Lastly the side Stiching near the toe has come out. This is due to the flexing and could be fixed by salomon by reinforcement or changing where the Stiching lies. Some small cracks in the bottom end of the shoe have appeared due to flex too.
All in all great shoes. If they were normal laces they would have less issues but I love the quick lace system.
Salamon gtx shoes., 28 January 2017

I've had two pairs of these shoes and they have been great in most aspects. My walking shoes do a lot of hard work and I am wearing them nearly everyday.
Pros: I love the quick lace up system as you can leave it loose just to slip your feet into if you are nipping outside or do them up for longer walks easily. They are very comfortable and supportive once broken in for about 3 hours
Cons: Where they really fail is that after 6-8 months they start to get smelly and the glue fails so the souls start falling off. They also lose their waterproofing pretty quickly and despite washing them this didn't really help.
Because of this I am going to try something different this year. I will miss the unique lacing system though.
Great shoes, unreliable lacing system, 04 November 2016
By roger (Stockport)
Great shoe, incredibly comfortable with good cushioning under the heel and good grip. With a conventional lacing system it would be almost ideal BUT when quick lacing system fails in the hills there is nothing you can do about it. I was 6 miles from my car when lace broke - just had to walk as best I could over rough ground with loose shoe! Only had them 5 months! [In the past the system was different - the lace had 2 anchor points so if lace failed on one side of foot the other side held shoe in place. Now when the lace fails there is absolutely nothing to secure the shoe, and nothing you can do about it.]
great shoes - salomon x ultra, 18 September 2016
By mike (plymouth)
found these brilliant. Totally waterproof in winter and cool in the summer, well into my second year and still going strong. The laces have worn away but have been replaced by salomon under the 2 year guarantee
Not built to last, 20 August 2016

Great comfortable shoe however after just over a year the sole has come away and one of the kevlar laces snapped. I should also point out some possible planned obsolescence with the eyelets, they are metal right down to the last 2 which are fabric, the lace which broke also took the bottom eyelet out just before it went due to friction. Just sent them back to the manufacturer to see what they might do. Such a shame really, before they started to fall apart i would have given these a straight up 5 star review.
