If you ever have to take a rucksack with sleeping bag, mat and so on strapped to it on a low-cost airline, this will save you an incredible amount of hassle - at least, it did for me.
Otherwise, not the most practical item - invest in a raincover instead and you can still carry your pack with the proper straps.
