Hardwaring climbing waterproof, 31 January 2010
By Hewin (Shropshire)
I've used this jacket for trail running, bothy trips to Scotland, ice climbing in Wales and alpine climbing and it performs well in all situations but it really excels for climbing. Personally I run hot and normally only wear a dry fit top under the Latok unless I'm stationary. No jacket will keep you dry if you are in the pouring rain in Scotland for many hours, but Event fabric in my experience is better than GoreTex and HyVent. The cut of the jacket is perfect for climbing in terms of both harness fit and reach/flexibility in the jacket. It takes a helmet perfectly and the pockets and draw strings are all simple and well thought out and therefore easy to use with gloves. The jacket is very hardwaring and I've tested this scrambling and climbing in it. It's not the lightest coat in the world, so it isn't the best for running in but that said there are plenty worse! In short if you want a hardwaring mountain waterproof for climbing you can do a lot worse. One note: eVent fabric works best when its clean so wash regularly with Grangers or Nikwax.

I brought the Rab Latok Alpine Jacket as a gift to myself for my 21st + 9 Birthday. I brought it as a replacement for my old waterproof jacket which I have owned for many years. Time for an upgrade… As I was planning to spend around £150 - £200 on a new jacket I started with three different makes in mind. These were the Mountain Equipment Morpheus Jacket, The North Face Downpour Jacket and of course the Rab Latok Alpine Jacket. These are all similar in price and style. The North Face was the first to go as is was too heavy for what I wanted and if I am honest is was a bit too fiddly with too many pockets and zips plus I do think you pay for the name with The North Face. The Mountain Equipment Morpheus came a very close second and is a good jacket but in the end it was the Rab Latok Alpine Jacket that came out on top. It is very light and has just the right number of pockets in all the right places, for example you can wear a climbing harness and still access all the pockets. The two inner pockets fit a folded os map with ease, almost as if they were designed for that very purpose. The Event material is a miracle. With this jacket on you simply don’t get wet! The purchase of this Jacket stated my love affair with all things Rab and as a result I have brought the Rab power stretch fleece as a mid layer to go underneath the Latok Alpine Jacket and plan to buy the Rab Baltoro Guide Mens Softshell Jacket as my 21st + 10 birthday present in a few months time. In conclusion if you are in the market for a new waterproof I suggest you buy this one and start your love affair with Rab today.
