Trangia Gas Converter!, 28 January 2010
By chizinbungay (Rillington)
I had been using Methylated spirits in my trangia for a good while, when the school that I often work with on Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions purchased gas converters for all of their trangia's. I was sceptical at first because they seemed a lot of money for what they were but I am now a regular user of one myself and would not go out without it. Gas burns hotter, and boils water much quicker than meths but it is also really lightweight and fits nicely inside the saucepan or kettle. The school took them to Ecuador and they worked very well at altitude also. The only issue I have found with them is over time if not handled carefully, and students are not always the most careful, the metal pipe can leak at either end and in one instance the gas control tap caught fire on top of the gas bottle. Definitely not a major design floor however just not treated properly. Certainly all in all much more convenient than meths and I would not go back to meths now! A worth while extra purchase if you are investing in a new trangia!
