Excellent Base Layer, 19 April 2010
By ott-on-the-hill (south england)
I own the blue XS Crewe and have used it for hiking and cycling.
The fabric is lovely: soft and very cotton-like on the skin.
Warmth-wise, this is also very good. I have used it on winter evenings as my sleep top and been perfectly toasty. In summer, it is my evening layer and I don't need a fleece to keep warm. If I need to ensure I stay warm - e.g. on a recent 4-day hike in Dartmoor over Easter when it was very cold (we got hail most days!) I wear my Icebreaker all day. it breathes well, so I never got overheated, although I would not wear it on a day that I expected to be warm or if I thought I would be doing an activity that would warm me up (e.g. running).
Smell-wise, the longest that I have worn this top without washing was 4 days. Although it smelled a little (I am a rather stinky person), it was not anything of the magnitude of polypro base layers that I have owned in the past. Bettter still, the smell completely disappears after a wash - even a wash without detergent - unlike polypro, which after a while, I find the smell just stays! So it wins on this front, too.
My main gripe with Icebreaker is its price (though understandable for the quality still seems a bit steep and I only buy it if I see it on special) and sizing.
I did find the sizing a bit on the small side; I usually take small or XS and because it was a base layer, I bought the XS. This is a little *too* tight and I don't tend to wear it on its own because it makes a me a bit self-conscious. It is very figure hugging! It would have been useful if this information was somewhere when I purchased ... but I guess that's here now for future buyers!
In summary, this is an excellent base layer. You can't go wrong with it and you will definitely be warm enough, though it also breathes well. Just bear in mind - it's a figure hugging cut and the sizing seems to be on the small side.

Best Base Layer, 15 February 2010

I found this base layer tshirt to be the best one I've used. I have it in black (doesn't show the muck up!) and found that when you get the chance to wash it, it dries ultra fast, so its back on your back in no time.
It is made from very fine fabric which feels really soft against your skin, and there are no itchy labels or anything to annoy you.
Icebreaker stuff is known for its quality, and this piece really shows that.

I will never buy anything other than icebreaker after I was recommended this by someone else- it's well worth it's retail price- & a bargain here!
I wore it continuously on an exped to Greenland for 18days- where the only washing facilities was an icy dip in the glacial waters!
Not only did it not smell, but it kept me warm at night & cool during the day when I was climbing/ walking.
I've also worn it running, and it keeps the chill out- with out over heating. It's easy to wash and keeps a flattering shape- there aren't many practical tops that look good!
I've always used Helly Hansens before, but you really can't compare them, & I'd rather pay extra for an icebreaker!
