Be careful, 04 December 2012

Pros: lighter and smaller than gri-gri 1
Cons: Handle is smaller and therfore makes it hared to hold especially if you are lowering someone who is heavier (which is usually why i would suggest a gri-gri). does not allow smooth and controlled lowering on a wet rope, sticks and then fully releases with the smallest changes in pressure. See far too many people trying to lead belay using a gri-gri (either model) who are NOT doing so safely, you still have to hold the dead rope.
Yes, it is a halpful back up with groups, but it also doesnt enforce the seriousness of their job in holding the rope... which leads us on to...
I see far too many people relying on the SEMI auto locking function of this device. It is not 100%, it doesnt mean that you can be a lazy belay partner.
Please dont buy this becasue you think it will make you a safer belayer...it seems to do the opposite!

Fantastic little device, even better than the old one. its feels very positive and robust. its great if you like putting lots of hours down climbing with a partner, by the end of the day when your hands are aching your belaying can still be slick and safe.
I would disagree with the abseiling comment that was left previous, The device generates alot of heat when used for abseiling and it can be quiet snatchy lacking any speed control...... also abbing without back up?? yer ok...
if the handle failed you would be stuck up there.
can also be used effectively as a tensioner, brilliant little versatile device, dont think that it will be great for newbies though, as panicking and grabbing a gri gri can cause it to fail to lock.

What an excellent little piece of kit. Bought one yesterday to replace the old version I lost years ago. Not only can this be used to make a group belaying safer but I've also used it with a tibloc to ascend rope safely. It can also be used to abseil safely without a back up.

i bought the GriGri 2 to replace my ATC belay device. The grigri is great so smooth when letting your climber down, takes some getting use to it but i can't go climbing without. It gets my vote
