got this coat last year has done me well never let in water and used on a regular basis working dogs wind proof but would recommend you wear a layer under it as when you stand about in it you soon feel the cold but fine as long as you keep moving

great jacket, 19 December 2011

Bought to use whilst commuting on a bicycle. Great jacket , keep nice and dry. This jacket will not keep you warm however it will keep you dry so best to layer up. Also very light to fit in your bag.

Berghaus Men's RG1 Waterproof Jacket, 01 December 2011
By Hermit (Oxfordshire)
Perhaps there is a mix up with the sizing labels. I bought the small size because the medium was too large, and I can still comfortably wear my spectrum fleece and two base layers underneath it.

Be careful with the zips, they do snag in the netting, taking a long time to free up.

There is no map pocket. Inclusion of an inside map pocket to accommodate O/S maps would have been useful, but by the time I thought of that I had already bought it.

I’ve worn the RG1 for over a year and think the jacket is well worth fifty quids worth, which is what they are discounted for these days, but I would only trust it for light use. It is comfortable and breathable, being light to wear, and I particularly like the short length for walking fast in. . It is packable, folding down small enough to stuff into the rear side pocket of my 25 ltr day sack.

BUT

If I had to be out in the persistence for any length of time, such as a steady fine rain for several hours, or several cloud bursts in one day, I wouldn’t trust this jacket to keep me dry. It worked well up until the third time I wore the jacket in the rain, the water droplets beading and rolling off. Since then however it only takes a light rain for the jacket to wet out, and although I can’t say the water has penetrated the jacket yet, it doesn’t inspire confidence, and the jacket becomes noticeably weightier for not repelling the water droplets. I’m aware that the RG1 Is only a coated DWR jacket , so I’ll have to upgrade to one of the Gortex jackets from the Berghaus range.

Fantastic, 24 November 2011
By Hillmaster (Stoke-on- Trent)
If you are thinking about buying this jacket I would urge you to go ahead. I have had many light weigfht waterproof jackets in the passed but this one I can say is the best of all. It is wind proof, totally water proof and most of all very, very, breathable. It folds away to a size that will fit easily into a day sack and is very comfortable. 1 thing I will say is that it is not a winter jacket and although wind proof is quite thin so you would have to wear a couple of layers underneath in could weather. All in all well worth the price so go for it.

Fab jacket, 15 November 2011
By Boo (Willenhall)
I absolutely love this coat! I am quite a 'large' lady and women's coats especially the named ones just do not fit me! I bought this coat to wear with jeans and especially to drive in as i don't like bulky jackets and coats. It fits well although to give it a more feminine touch i recommend pulling side drawstrings in. Its light, windproof and i am yet to test it in the rain but i do not need any long sleeves under it. Match it with a scarf, a pair of fleecy gloves and a wooly hat and i think it looks stylish. Very pleased and i must say Go Outdoors delivery service was spot on too!!! Very happy bunny

Will not be buying Berghaus again., 17 September 2011
By hullabaloo (London)
I have an old Berghaus jacket which has done me well, but is now at the end of its life. I bought this jacket to replace it just over a year ago but have not worn it very much because it was disappointing from the beginning.

It is very scantily cut - you need to order at least a size larger than your normal size - so no room for layers. The zips are light duty and cheap; the pocket zips constantly jamb in the mesh pocket lining.

Above all it is not properly waterproof! I have worn my old jacket for hours in a West Country downpour and stayed bone dry. This one fails after 30 minutes in any but light rain.

Simply not worth buying at any price. I am now looking for a replacement from another manufacturer.

My buy of the year, 02 September 2011

Bought this jacket to begin my outdoor adventures and all i can say is wow. It's served me well

It's light and comfortable and in a decent amount of rain it kept me bone dry.

Would highly recommend.

Great but some faults, 17 August 2011
By Tardigrades (Stroud)
Bought as a back-up to a Berghaus Cornice for summer hiking and fishing. Cannot complain at this price. The velcro can be a pain, attaching as it does to the inner lining. But as a back-up I can't fault it.

I bought this as a rain coat that could live in my work bag when not needed. Its proven durable and waterproof and does not look like I am about to climb everest when getting into work. Perfectly fit for purpose.

Great jacket, 30 June 2011
By Louis (Falkirk)
Bought one of these jackets aboyt 6 weeks ago from Coatbridge store. Very pleased with the jacket as it is light and windproof. In colder weather you would really need to wear another layer as it doesn't provide a lot of warmth.

Waterproof but fiddly, 28 June 2011
By Shah (London)
I bought this jacket a few months ago, and I have to say I am quite happy. Fully waterproof and windroof, although I have to say the outer shell stays wet for a long time. So if its wet, the javket will absorb the cold wind, so you must make sure you have an internal fleece.

I hate the pockets as it has a mesh in the inner, so the zip keeps getting stuck on this.

Other than that, a good jacket that looks fab even in the town with a pair of jeans.

Overall a good jacket, 27 June 2011
By Stu G (Fareham)
Bought this jacket to replace an older one and it has proved to perform well. Christened it on a trip to the Lake District where we climbed Striding Edge upto Helvellyn, and also Scafell Pike. The weather was raining and windy all weekend with alot of mountain fog, and low clouds, therefore it experienced a decent amount of exposure to the elements! Jacket kept me dry and warm throughout, and when the weather did improve (albeit for 30 minutes!) it proved to fold away and pack down to a surprisingly small size, making it ideal for daysacks.
It doesn't hang quite as well as it could, and sometimes you can get a little damp from the sweat beneath the jacket, but no real biggies. Overall a good jacket at a good price.

RG1, 23 June 2011
By Stuart (Stevenage)
RG1 what I thought was a WATERPROOF jacket I would say is more like showerproof.

Bought this for a trip to Snowdon last year, let me down big time. Used a washin coating still leaked, also does not hang correctly, hood could do with a peak, plus does not breath thus you get wet when it isnt even raining. A bit disappointed at paying £65 for and also being a Berghaus!!!

Great all conditions Jacket - RG1, 23 May 2011
By GreigB (Oxford)
I bought this jacket last summer in preparation of the three peaks challenge that a group of us were undertaking. The jacket became an instant favourite. Is ideal for going walking in warm weather as is not heavy should it need to carried, but great to have should unexpected rain arrive.

In bad conditions (rain and wind) it was up to the task. The jacket has been to the top of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon and kept me warn and dry throughout, there was a lot of rain and wind at the top of Ben Nevis.

It has also been my jacket of choice in the winter, of course with padding underneath, good fleece should do the job.

Overall the jacket has been superb

Good warm jacket, 11 March 2011
By Seejays
I bought this to go over a Berghaus fleece to keep warm on winter walks and on the school run. Very comfortable and warm - slight shower we had recently was fine but not tried it out in heavy rain.

Only downside I can see is the hanging tag inside the collar is attached to the flimsy inner lining and not the main material so it hangs completely out of shape.

Burghaus RG1, 04 February 2011
By Johno (Hereford)
Great for going into town, walking the dog etc, great fit (im 5 6" and the xs fits like a glove!) Waterproof, but not in long periods, so more of a showerproof jacket. If your after a fully waterproof jacket then spend a little more money.

A Great Waterproof Jacket, 23 January 2011
By Shah (London)
I bought this RG1 in the Winter of 2010. I had worn many waterproofs, but ended up sweating like I was in a sauna! This one has a mesh inside to it does not do that and the jacket is breathable.

I bought this jacket so that I can have the benefit of being fully waterproof, but not having to carry a heavy jacket around or one that feels like a bin bag.

Worst rain was last week, and I got soaked from head to toe, but nothing innerwise. I was totally dry inside the jacket. Only downside is that the jacket didn't dry very fast, and felt really cold when I put the jacket back on.

If you are buying this jacket, I would advise to buy a good fleece for chilly weather.

Good idea to waterproof once in a while (after a good soak from the rain) with Nikwax or Grangers, which are available from Go Outdoors. Bung the jacket in the wash, with the waterproofer, dry in a tumble dryer or heater, and yoour jacket is fully waterproof again.

Looks great on outings in the city with a pair of jeans.

Get a pair of Berhaus fleece gloves and Hat to go with it! Come Snowdon or Nevis, your fully fit for the job!

Berghaus RG1 Mens, 30 December 2010
By Pete (Harrogate)
Good solid performer this one. I have yet to try it in any real downpours but it has kept me dry in light showers. It isnt overly windproof so could do with a mid or base layer if out in the cold weather. Also it isnt the most breatheable when hill walking and doesnt seem to wick the moisture much. Worth bearing in mind that it is only an entry level jacket and you could easily pay 3 times the price for something which would do a similar job.
