Features
The most evolved 'belay plate' style device available offering clever additional functionality.
One of the most versatile single/double rope belay devices available. Not only do you get all the functionality of a standard tube belay device but also a self breaking mode and the ability to belay two seconds simultaneously.
Optional breaking assistance is provided by Petzl's ARC (Adaptive Rope Control) technology. Engage ARC for extra holding power by simply running the dead rope through the V slots. For smoother paying out, lowering or abseiling flip the device around and bypass the ARC system.

Petzl Reverso 3, 19 August 2011

PROs: Works effectively with narrow ropes. Not too slick, not too grabby. Doubles up as a Guide's 'Magic Plate'.
CONs: Rope slots a little narrow for old, inflexible/furred large diameter ropes. In magic plate mode you need choose a good, round cross-section karabiner for the ropes to run over, and also to be aware that you can't pay out slack under load (at least not without a real faff), but both of these things are the same for all such devices. Personally, I've found it to release less abruptly than the ATC Guide, but there's very little in it.

I bought this belay device because I lost my old one, a black diamond atc guide. I loved the guide and never had any problems with it, but the reverso 3 seemed like an identical replacement but a few pounds cheaper so i decided to get one.
Sadly, the Reverso 3 does not match up to the ATC Guide. When using the Reverso 3 from a direct belay, it becomes almost impossible to pull two ropes at once as the device keeps jamming. Further more, once loaded, it is very very hard to release and lower the second down.
If you intend to by a belay device that you wish to be able to use from a direct belay, I would not recommend the Reverso 3 and it is a lot of hard work and very frustrating to use.
