The Youth Hostels Association (YHA) is to invest £10 million in upgrading five ageing hostels and add a completely new one.

Those who love to go walking in the Lake District may enjoy the results of the £1.42 million refurbishment of Ambleside YHA on the banks of Windermere, while visitors to the Yorkshire Dales can look forward to a more luxurious stay at Malham YHA.

Canterbury, York and Stratford-upon-Avon hostels are also being improved.

The work helps move the YHA forwards from its old image of rickety beds and Spartan conditions.

Visitors to England's newest national park may be excited to see what facilities will be on offer when the new £5 milion hostel opens in the South Downs.

There is already a hostel named South Downs YHA, which is located at Itford Farm near Beddingham.

Other YHA accommodation in the national park includes the hostels at Alfriston, Telscome, Truleigh Hill and Arundel, with the Eastbourne hostel just outside the national park boundary.ADNFCR-2803-ID-801503165-ADNFCR
