The first specialist avalanche training site in the world has been opened at Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms.
It is designed to train rescuers to find people trapped under snow using the devices, which can transmit radio signals even when buried.
When carried by those out walking in winter snows, it means they can send signals to show where they are to enable rescuers to dig them out while there is still sufficient oxygen.
Opening the facility, Scotland's sports minister Shona Robison said it is "a timely reminder to those heading out into the great outdoors in winter to plan ahead, check the weather and ensure they have the correct safety equipment and knowledge".
Walkers may wish to ensure they have items like crampons
or ice grips for shoes
as well as warm winter jackets
Glenmore Lodge is located close to the Cairngorm ski centre and the vicinity offers access to five of the six highest mountains in Scotland.
