The Mountain Weather Information Service is to provide earlier updates on winter conditions, it has revealed.

People heading for the hills in their walking boots and waterproofs in the coming months may note that it will issue an update to its initial daily forecast at 13.30 GMT, instead of 19:30 GMT at present.

Spokesman Andy Ross explained to Grough: "This is done every winter as an aid to safe decision making for hillwalkers and climbers, allowing for earlier forward planning during the winter months."

As well as the main update, there will be amendments to the forecast as the day goes on, he noted.

The information service covers eight different areas of upland across the UK.

With winter approaching, walkers may wish to be more aware of the growing risks they could face in some areas.

The Scottish Avalance Information Service will be operating from December 15th, providing warnings of potential snow deluges in the Highlands.
