The Adventurer of the Year competition is now closed, with the winner due to be announced later this month - but some of the entrants have come forward to discuss a few of their favourite activities.
Rachel Speight of Haxby in York, for example, told the York Press that one of her goals is to promote the Yorkshire countryside so others can get the same sense of achievement and satisfaction as she does through outdoor pursuits.
She enjoys donning hiking boots
and scaling the peaks of the likes of Ben Nevis and Snowdon, although she is also keen to snowboard and has biked from York to Amsterdam.
David Burne, meanwhile, is a "big fan of anything to do with the outdoors" and devotes his time to climbing, mountain biking, hill walking and power kiting - he plans to kayak some of Sri Lanka's waterfalls and rapids.
Even toddlers have entered the competition, which is run by UK retailer Go Outdoors. The news source reported in April that Erin Barry of Heworth enjoys exploring hills, moors and woods, as well as climbing trees.
