People wanting to don some outdoor clothing and make the most of half-term with their families may want to head to the Westonbirt Arboretum, which has been named by the Forestry Commission as one of the ten best sites to visit during autumn.

Located in the heart of the Cotswolds, it is world famous for the bright autumnal shadow of its trees and home to the country's national collection of Japanese maples, which display shades of "vibrant oranges and reds" as their leaves fall.

Also included on the list from the manager of the public forest estate in England is the Wye Valley in the Forest of Dean, where the Symonds Yat offers a great view of autumnal trees, as well as the Maulden Woods in Bedfordshire, described by the commission as "beautiful woodland".

In addition, for owners of cycle gear there are the singletrack mountain bike courses at Kielder Castle in Northumberland, which offers a bike hire service.ADNFCR-2803-ID-800154870-ADNFCR
