One of the coldest Mays in the past century is set to end with much warmer temperatures as summer finally arrives, weathermen have said.
The Met Office predicted that temperatures could rise into the low 20s by the end of this week, something that could herald the beginning of a warm, sunny summer after years of disappointment and cowering under umbrellas.
People keen to don their walking shoes
and head into the countryside may find that investing in hydration packs could help ensure they don't get too thirsty on hot, sunny days.
Despite the warmer temperatures, some places still have plenty of snow left over from the winter, indicating that those heading for higher hills should still don men's outdoor clothing
or women's outdoor clothing
The Cairngorm Mountain ski resort is still open for winter sports this weekend, although this will mainly involve sledging as the ski runs are all now closed.
