Those who want to get fitter in 2011 will discover they can make great progress if they go walking regularly, it has been noted.

Ramblers spokesperson Maria Castellina said walking one mile can burn off 1,000 calories, which may be welcome news for those who have overindulged over Christmas.

She said good footwear is the most important piece of attire for those taking up walking, adding: "If you walk regularly it is worth investing in a good pair of walking boots."

Those looking to make a new year resolution may wish to choose to walk more, with this being backed up by an investment in some boots and other items such as waterproof jackets for rainy days.

Recent research has suggested the health benefits of walking are not limited to burning off fat.

A recent study produced by the Radiological Society of North America suggested such activity can help mental health by slowing down the onset of dementia in later life.
