Maps and a manuscript belonging to the late fellwalking author Alfred Wainwright are to be auctioned in Cumbria.
They are among items to be sold by auctioneer HH Auction Rooms in Carlisle on June 25th, with fellwalking fans likely to be among the potential buyers.
Among them are a number of Ordnance Survey maps
with hand-written annotations by the writer, who gained fame for his seven pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells, published in the 1950s and 1960s.
These listed 214 fells and completing the Wainwrights is something many still aim to achieve today, although new Ordnance Survey maps
may be far more useful now due to changes in paths and roads, plus the creation of open access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.
Good walking boots
are important items for climbing the highest of these, the four English mountains over 3,000 ft - Scafell Pike, Scafell, Helvellyn and Skiddaw.
