Today (March 14th) is Sport your Trainers Day in Scotland.

Sporty Scotland has promoted the event in an attempt to encourage people to put on their running shoes and get active.

The date coincides with Commonwealth Day and with Glasgow hosting the next Commonwealth Games in 2014, the body is keen to use the upcoming event to encourage Scots to get outside more, be active and improve their fitness.

Chairman of Glasgow 2014 Lord Robert Smith said recently: "I'm looking forward to seeing how people across the country will embrace this new idea and pop their trainers on for the day."

The event will be run on each of the next three March 14ths as the Games approach.

And organisers of the event have said they believe three quarters of a million Scots have ten up the chance to wear their trainers today.

Those keen to buy trainers in Scotland can do so from three Go Outdoors stores - in Edinburgh, Coatbridge and Clydebank.

Scotland last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1986 in Edinburgh, while the most recent time it was held in the UK was in the 2002 Manchester event.
